Trouble For Antonio Davis Could Have Been Avoided

Christine's Tea Room

New York Knicks forward Antonio Davis was in overtime in a very emotional game when he looked into the stands and saw his wife being harrassed by a fan. Without a second thought, he leapt across the scorers table and was at his wife's side in seconds. He said later that he saw his wife falling back and he thought the fan was drunk.

For his heroic act Davis, who is president of the NBA Players Association, received a five-game suspension. In dollars that suspension is equals $700,000 to the 12-year veteran of the game. In a statement released this weekend, the fan says that he will not sue Davis and his wife if they apologize and make a donation to a charity in his name. Davis and his wife are already involved with several community charities. They don't need motivation from the fan.

I admire Davis for coming to his wife's defense. This is the kind of man I like to write about. One who will defend his woman without thought to the consequences to himself.

The hero in my first novel, Sweet Desire, was basketball coach at a university. To insure that his wife was not harrassed at games, university officials were very careful about who sat near Regina, his wife. If such care had been taken in the Knicks case, Davis would not have had to rush to protect his wife and perhaps the Knicks would have won the game.
